Bengtsons Ost Jönköping

ABOUT BENGTSONS OST
It all began with a small cheese shop in the centre, at Klostergatan 9, Lund in 1951.
Bengtsons Ost was founded by Inga and Thure Bengtson, who laid the foundation for what Bengtsons Ost still is today. Over the years they expanded with their own dairy in Denmark, which mainly produced white-mould cheeses such as Brie and Camembert. To this day, relatives of the dairy workers of that time still come to the shops and retell their story. A large part of the success is the in-house maturing of Swedish, classic hard cheeses such as Herrgård, Präst and Grevé, whose maturing can stretch up to 3 years. All cheese that is matured is carefully checked by Bengtsons Ost's own maturing specialists.
Bengtsons Ost's main range consists of cheeses from every corner of Europe, but we also offer cured meats, olives and delicacies such as chocolate pralines and goose liver, as well as ready-made gifts. As a complement, simpler meals are offered in the form of sandwiches and cheese and charcuterie boards. Our carefully selected and hand-picked products are what helps create a world-class taste experience.
Over the years the concept has evolved, and today Bengtsons Ost is much more than an ordinary cheese shop. Today it is a cheese chain, and the business is run in the same old spirit but with new modern systems and an updated concept that is truly right for the times.

Frequently asked questions
The answer is that it varies. Often the products keep much longer than you think, if they have been handled well and stored well chilled.
If you put the cheese out for a while at room temperature and then chill it again, the flavour will change.
The important thing is to trust your senses!
There is absolutely no danger in consuming dairy products as long as they taste good and smell fresh. Regardless of the date printed on the packaging, or whether the packaging has been opened or not.
For more questions, you are welcome to ask us in the store. Or write an email to asecs@bengtsonsost.se

There is no exact shelf life for an opened or cut cheese. How long the cheese keeps depends mainly on how it is stored, handled and the environment it is kept in.
For the cheese to keep as long as possible, it should be stored the right way:
Store the cheese in cheese paper, a beeswax wrap or well wrapped in cling film.
Place it in the fridge's vegetable drawer or cheese drawer, where the temperature is often a little more even.
Make sure to cut with a clean knife, so that bacteria are not transferred to the cheese.
A hard household cheese can often keep for several weeks after opening if it is stored correctly. If the surface becomes a little dry, it is usually fine to cut away the outermost part.
Tip: If a little mould appears on a hard cheese, you can usually cut away about 1 cm around the area, as mould rarely spreads deep into firm cheeses.
A hard cheese rarely goes bad. Trust your senses too.
There is often misunderstanding around dates on cheese and delicacies.
A use-by date indicates the last day on which the food is judged to be safe to consume, and should always be followed.
A best-before date is about quality, not safety. Within cheese and charcuterie, products can often be perfectly edible long after the best-before date, provided they have been stored correctly and are judged to be normal in appearance, smell and taste.
That is why we also work according to the principle Look, Smell, Taste, where our senses and our professional knowledge are important tools for judging quality and avoiding unnecessary food waste, as well as educating customers who are not aware of it.
